How deep does a private power pole need to be?
That’s a good question. All new private power poles are required to be installed so that the concrete stabilisation finishes at least 300mm below ground level. This will increase stability of the structure and prevent it from collapsing during inspections.
An inspector will check to see the condition of a private power pole below the ground, looking for signs of corrosion or decay. Doing so will allow them to determine whether there is a risk to public safety. Surrounding soil or concrete will need to be removed up to a depth of at least 200mm during this process.
What is the best material – wood, steel or composite?
Homeowners can choose a wood, steel or composite power pole, based on their preferences. Keep in mind that there are advantages and disadvantages to each option.
Timber power poles
Timber power poles have a lifespan of 15-25 years. They can be cut to a variety of sizes, with the most common choice usually being between 8 and 11 metres. This material will create more of a natural look, and will last longer than steel. Heavy lifting machinery is required for safe installation due to heaviness. Timber is prone to termite damage and should not be used in particularly wet areas or anywhere with above normal moisture levels.
Steel power poles
Steel power poles have a lifespan of 10-15 years and are generally easier to install, as heavy lifting machinery is not required. A key benefit is that they are termite proof, and they can be more aesthetically pleasing than timber. In terms of the limitations, steel power poles can generally only measure at a maximum of 7.2 metres. Keep in mind that some energy companies have policies restricting technicians from climbing private steel power poles for safety reasons.
